Who We Are
The Bread Wagon is a unique country store located three miles north of the city of Thomasville. Our bakery is known for cakes made from scratch, loaves of bread that taste just like Grandma’s did, and cinnamon rolls drizzled with glaze. Many of our products are made from family recipes that have been handed down. The Bread Wagon is full of special treats such as jams and jellies, pickles, snack mixes, chicken salad, and a wide variety of candy.
In addition to our baked goods and bulk foods, we also offer cheese and butter from Ohio, sandwich meats from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and a whole selection of frozen casseroles for convenient meals at home.
HOW WE STARTED
The owner, Anna Marie, traces her love for the business back to helping with the family bakery in Virginia as a teenager. Cooking and baking are an important part of her Mennonite and Amish heritage, and opening a similar store in Georgia allowed Anna Marie to use her skills to support her family and give them something to do together. While intending to keep the business small, it fast became a Thomasville staple, and has expanded numerous times.
Inspiration has also come from Anna Marie’s childhood memories of her mother baking bread, and telling stories from the Depression era about the creativity, faith, and simplicity that they relied upon. The Bread Wagon’s old fashioned decor and hands on baking reflect back to those simpler times.
HISTORY OF THE NAME
The name of the bakery hearkens back to the 1800s, when baked goods were hand delivered in cities much like the iconic milk deliveries. Daily rounds from the bread wagons ensured fresh and tasty baked goods. Today, our goal is to provide fresh, delicious cakes and breads to you. We do not use artificial preservatives, so we recommend using or freezing baked goods within five days.
